The majority of my posts on this site focus heavily on water-related appliances, but I’ve spent very little time going over water, itself! While the topic goes about as deep as anyone would want it to, I want to focus on one specific question: ”What are the benefits of drinking water?” Most people know that human beings are made of 60% to 70% water (depending on who you ask) and that the Earth consists of about 70% water, but that’s generally where the line of inquiry stops. This is a real pity, because in the days of trendy energy drinks and sugary alternatives, plain old cold water is still invariably the best source of naturally occurring hydration and bodily health! Let’s take a look at some of the health benefits of drinking water:
Basic Hydration
Perhaps the most obvious benefit of drinking water is hydration. The word “hydration” as related to the human body means a whole lot of things. For one, healthy kidney function and normalized blood pressure heavily rely on getting enough water into the system. Beyond this, proper water consumption cuts down on migraines, cramped muscles, and a whole slew of other maladies that people are increasingly experiencing as a result of not drinking enough water. Finally, getting enough water into your body will keep you awake and alert as well as keeping the digestive tract healthy. If you find that you experience constipation on a regular basis, start with a simple analysis of whether you’re drinking enough H2O!
Basic symptoms of dehydration that you can easily identify on your own: Excessive hunger and thirst, dry skin, fatigue, and dark colored urine. Make sure to consult a doctor if these symptoms get out of hand, but don’t discount the simple power of beginning a healthy water consumption regimen and allowing the body to take care of itself. It’s amazing how often the simplest answer or solution is the correct course of action, and drinking water certainly falls in this category.
Detoxification
Over the course of a human life, it’s basically inevitable that various toxins and other impurities will be introduced. These things need to be worked out of the body, and one of the most natural ways to do this is through the urine stream. Drinking enough water ensures that you are consistently flushing out your body in a healthy way, getting all those nasty toxins out and allowing the body to work at optimum levels.
Weight Regulation
Much like the fancy energy drinks that I was referring to earlier, another (perhaps more devious) fad is the explosion in diet pills and other related products. The sad fact of the matter is that most weight-related dietary issues simply come down to the age-old adage: Eat less and move more. This is easier said than done for many people, of course, so we need to do everything in our power to make it easy for our bodies to naturally shed excess weight. Regular consumption of 8 to 12 glasses of water a day will give the body much of the fuel it needs to not only lose weight, but also efficiently benefit from good old fashioned exercise.
On a related note, drinking enough water helps to ensure that the body efficiently absorbs the good nutrients that are present in the foods we eat. A dehydrated body has to work a lot harder not only to push out toxins and other contaminants, but also to retain and properly process the good stuff. You really owe it to yourself to take this incredibly simple step toward making it easy for your body to do its job, whether it means picking up a water cooler for your home gym or settings reminders for yourself around the house. It will pay dividends in terms of your daily sense of wellness!
