Water dispenser units generally come in two variants, those with bottles and those that use an alternative method for water containment. Which type you choose will largely depend on a number of factors such as how much space you have, what kind of plumbing system you have, and budget for consistent deliveries of fresh water bottles.
I’m currently recommending the Avanti Water Dispenser w/Pedestal package as the best bang-for-your-buck, self-contained water dispenser, but if you’re not sure which type of water dispenser to get, then read on for more info.
Bottled Water Dispensers
These are usually found in an office environment or other location that does not provide a reliable plumbing system that could be used for water dispensation. Since there is no water storage available, it needs to be delivered in bottles. This replacement water is provided by a number of different companies that are desperate to compete for your attention, so you can generally get a good price.
Another advantage of the bottled dispenser is that you save a lot of money down the road on potential issues with plumbing. Through my research on these dispensers I’ve spoken with many business owners. These people have run the gamut from feeling great about the bottle-less dispensers to absolutely hating them.
The reason for this variety of responses is down to the quality of the plumbing system in each of their buildings. What’s the lesson here? Be sure to check up on your plumbing so you can make an informed decision on which product to purchase!
Perhaps the biggest advantage to the bottled dispenser is portability. If you are unhappy with the placement of the cooler, you can move it quite easily without having to consider where it will hook up to your water supply.
Dispensers Without a Bottle
Of course, the other option is to go with the system that relies on your water supply. The real pro here is a sleek, professional look.
This, coupled with not having to rely on a water delivery service, makes the bottle-less water dispenser option a great one for people who have reliable water. Even if you do have a dispenser that relies on your water supply, you can get around quality issues by installing a simple filtration system that uses a technique called “reverse osmosis,” for instance.
This filter comes with a membrane that captures contaminants and keeps them out of your water. (Incidentally, I have a post about the Whirlpool ice maker, another device that can benefit greatly from a reverse osmosis filter).
So What Should You Buy?
There is no easy answer to this question because the decision depends so heavily on the unique circumstances of your home or office environment.
Again, my personal recommendation is the Avanti Water Dispenser w/Pedestal package if you want a fully self-contained unit that is well-reviewed. If you want something beyond the Avanti unit, check out your plumbing and figure out how much space you can afford to dedicated to a water dispenser. If portability is a big concern for you, you’ll almost certainly want to go with the bottled water cooler! Read more about the best Water Dispenser Guide
